Summer Reading

Phaedra Taylor teaches art to children. Her pastor husband reported the following in a recent blog.

"One of her eight-year-old kids recently said, with a little twinkle in her eye, ‘Mrs. Phaedra, I tried to draw a mermaid, and mermaids are hard to draw, but I just drew it over and over and over and over and over again, because that’s what you have to do.’ I love that as an image for spiritual disciplines. By God’s grace you do something over and over again, and you trust that He forms us in the midst of our discipline."

I might add that we are formed in the lessons learned in the do-overs. I’ve never tried to draw a mermaid, but I have tried to make an image faithful to the original model. I’d make a mark and judge it too short. Redo. Add more marks. Too wide. Redo. My art teacher once noticed that the model’s arms in my drawing were too short. Redo the arms, the waist, the skirt and the chair. And so it goes. Along the way, I was improving my seeing and my rendering. The lessons learned from doing over made all the difference to my moving on toward making a faithful image for others to see. Theophilus

LIBRARY NEWS

The Silent Gift – Michael Landon Jr. and Cindy Kelley – Fiction. The 1930s were a decade of enormous uncertainty--for the world, for America, and in particular for one lonely, struggling mother and her disabled son. Their story is one of love and enormous sacrifices in the face of circumstances horrendous beyond belief. When her husband leaves her for someone whose time isn't wrapped up in a silent, handicapped kid, Mary and little Luke are out on their own in a world that has no room for the poor and disabled, especially not at a time when most Americans are simply trying to survive their economic woes and job losses. But then arrives The Gift...Where has it come from, and why? How can a young boy who can neither hear nor speak provide comfort, direction, and sometimes challenges to seekers who learn of the special ability? Whatever the source, its presence brings a single shaft of light and hope to Mary and her beloved Luke. Will it be enough?

Spring’s Renewal – Seasons of Sugarcreek Series #2 – Shelley Shepard Gray – Fiction. Tim Graber arrives in Sugarcreek to help his aunt and uncle with spring planting. At first, Tim doesn’t fit in with his many cousins and their crowded lifestyle. But when he meets Clara Slabaugh, the local school teacher, he understands why the Lord brought him to Sugarcreek. Clara is shy and quiet. Scarred from a fire when she was small, Clara has resigned herself to living alone and caring for her mother, who tells her that no man will ever see past her scars, and that Clara needs to keep teaching in order to make ends meet. Her father passed away years ago, and her mother depends on her. But the scars mean nothing to Tim. He appreciates her quiet nature and her wonderful, loving way with children. Yet Tim has a sweetheart back home in Indiana. As these two hearts struggle to determine their path, tragedy strikes, and every other worry seems insignificant in comparison. Though they now face a life they never imagined, will Tim and Clara have the faith to step out and risk everything for a chance at true love?

Defiance Texas Trilogy – Mary E. DeMuth – Fiction.

#1 Daisy Chain - The abrupt disappearance of young Daisy Chance haunts the small town of Defiance, Texas. Fourteen-year-old Jed Pepper searches for answers in this gritty and compelling story of love and sorrow, revealing God’s hand of redemption in impossible situations.

Slow Burn #2 - Emory Chance needs to find who killed her daughter Daisy and unravel the mystery behind the grim cross-stitched warning found on her front porch. The second book in the Defiance, Texas Trilogy, A Slow Burn is a suspenseful story about courageous love, the power of forgiveness, and the bonds that never break.

#3 Life in Defiance - Set against the backdrop of Defiance, Texas, Life in Defiance, book three in the Defiance Texas Trilogy by Mary DeMuth, reflects a choice we all face: reveal our secrets or bury them forever … and live with the consequences.
